Initiatives

Harris Health’s Strategic Facilities Plan has four major projects:

$1.6 billion: new hospital on the Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) campus

  • Increase patient capacity from 215 to 390 inpatient beds, with room for up to 60 more
  • Introduce a third adult Level I trauma hospital to Houston
  • Economic boost for Northeast Harris County

$504.5 million: ambulatory care services

  • Three new clinics (Northshore/ Cloverleaf – Precinct 2; Northwest – Precinct 3; Southwest – Precinct 4)
  • Transition low-volume sites to larger comprehensive centers

$433 million: renovation to existing LBJ Hospital

  • Transform facility to address critical gaps in service
  • Provide for outpatient access

$410 million: renovations to Ben Taub Hospital in the Medical Center

  • Extend facility lifespan by 15 years
  • Address existing capacity limitations
  • Improve clinical inefficiencies
  • New inpatient tower adding approximately 120 new patient rooms

These initiatives will move Harris Health to an interconnected model structure.

Investing in ambulatory care will reduce the burden on our hospitals and increase their capacity to serve patients whose treatment must take place at a hospital.
Renovating the two existing hospitals will reduce the burden on the public hospital system by gaining efficiencies and expanding capacity.
Building an adult Level I trauma hospital will address critical service gaps and lessen the burden on Ben Taub, expanding emergency services to residents in Northeast Houston.
